Job Description and Duties

The Department of Toxic Substances Control is looking for a positive, team-oriented Senior Engineering Geologist to be part of a team addressing challenging investigations at military, Superfund, and other sites in the State of California. Come join us today!

As a Senior Engineering Geologist you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide oversight of all investigation, cleanup, long-term monitoring and maintenance, and closure activities related to assigned hazardous waste/substances sites in cooperation with other state agencies, the U.S. EPA, and project stakeholders
  • Provide technical review of documents that include large and complex data sets and illustrations supporting conclusions regarding the types and extent of contaminants in all media (soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater), the risks posed to human and environmental receptors, and the development of effective remedial alternatives  
  • Prepare detailed written comments regarding revisions to reviewed documents, adherence to environmental regulations, and recommendations for additional investigations and evaluations   
  • Work cooperatively with technical and legal staff including scientists, geologists, engineers, toxicologists, biologists, and attorneys to evaluate site data and garner their expertise on the content and conclusions in reviewed documents regarding completeness of site characterization, proposed remedial alternatives and strategies, protection of human health and the environment, design and implementation of remediation systems, the completion of remedial actions, and the interpretation and application of state and federal environmental regulations
  • Participate in quarterly technical group meetings with military representatives and their consultants, U.S.EPA, and other state regulatory agencies to review and discuss prior investigation and cleanup activities and their effectiveness and work cooperatively to address and resolve concerns, conflicts and problems and develop strategies to achieve project objectives
  • Evaluate complex hydrologic, geologic, and geochemical data to characterize the occurrence and migration of contaminants and prepare cross-sections, maps, charts, and graphs illustrating such relationships

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Requires valid certificate of registration as a geologist or geophysicist issued by the California Board of Geologists and Geophysicists
  • Experience with remedial investigations involving numerous contaminants in bedrock, soil, soil gas, surface water, and groundwater
  • CERCLA knowledge and experience working on Superfund sites
  • Experience providing regulatory oversight
  • Experience in performing or managing groundwater monitoring activities
  • Experience managing or overseeing drilling and well installation projects
  • Experience with complex geology and contaminant migration in fractured bedrock
  • Possess strong technical writing skills, proficient using MS Word
  • Possess strong environmental data analysis skills, proficient using MS Excel

Working Conditions

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. For more details, please click here .
